Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today demanded an apology from Congress president Rahul Gandhi for allegedly trying to defame BJP chief Amit Shah, saying the Supreme Court's dismissal of the pleas seeking a probe into the death of judge B H Loya "exposed" the "dirty design" of the opposition party.

He also said a "conspiracy" allegedly hatched by the Congress to frame Shah in a false case was "badly unmasked" before the people.

"I welcome the Supreme Court order on judge Loya case. It has exposed the dirty design of the Congress and Rahul Gandhi should apologise to the country," he told reporters here.

The chief minister said Gandhi had led a delegation of opposition parties to President Ram Nath Kovind to seek a probe into the matter.

The BJP chief minister said it has been the Congress' culture to "mislead" people on every issue and try to take political mileage out of it.

"The order will send a clear signal to those who try to defame political leaders through false cases," he said.

The Supreme Court today dismissed pleas seeking an independent probe into the death of the special CBI judge and ruled that he died of natural causes.

The petitions were a serious attempt to scandalise and obstruct the course of justice, the court said.

It dubbed the PILs into the death of judge Loya, who was hearing the high-profile Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, frivolous and motivated litigations to settle political scores.

Loya had died of cardiac arrest in Nagpur on December 1, 2014 when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague's daughter.

The issue of Loya's death had come under spotlight in November last year after media reports quoting his sister, had fuelled suspicion about the circumstances surrounding it and its link to the Sohrabuddin case.
