The Supreme Court today imposed a cost of Rs five lakh on a litigant for seeking to withdraw a petition without giving it prior intimation.

A bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi was irked by the fact that the petitioner had not informed the court about his intentions in advance by circulating a letter and remarked that it has spent time reading 800 pages of documents relating to the case.

The petitioner told the court that he does not want to pursue the matter after the matter was called for hearing.

"You cannot come and go like this as per your wishes. I had read 800 pages and now you want to withdraw the petition," Justice Gogoi said.

The court then directed the petitioner that he can withdraw the petition on depositing Rs five lakh cost.
