The Supreme Court has considered the "collective conciousness" of the society and rightly awarded the death penalty to the four convicts of December 16, 2012 sensational gangrape and murder case, senior advocate Sidharth Luthra said.

"The top court noted in its verdict that in a crime of this nature, the courts below have rightly awarded the death sentence to the four convicts. All the three judges concurred that this was a grave and heinous crime which deserves nothing less than capital punishment," Luthra, who appeared for the Delhi Police, said.

The senior lawyer also appreciated the role of the Delhi Police for collecting unimpeachable scientific evidence to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt in the court.

In his arguments before the top court, Luthra had argued that these convicts had "brutalised" the young woman and they deserved to be awarded death penalty.

"The offence committed by them (convicts) attracts death penalty. They have not given any mitigating circumstances which could warrant reduction of the sentence from death penalty which was awarded to them," he had said.
