The Supreme Court today issued notices to the Centre and states of Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bangal on a PIL seeking its direction to prohibit them from throwing waste material from factories into river Ganga and check pollution.
A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam also sought the response of Central Pollution Control Board.
The court passed the order on the PIL filed by one Ashok Narain Sharma, a resident of Patiala, seeking its interference in the matter to protect Ganga from getting polluted.

The petitioner submitted that the authorities be directed to construct a waste water channel parallel to Ganga to ensure that waste material does not get mixed up with the river water.
