West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said the Supreme Court's order of retaining the panchayat election date in the state on May 14, as per the earlier schedule, would be for the good of the people.

She said the Trinamool Congress was always for upholding the democratic rights of the people and wanted that the election process takes place in a peaceful manner.

"This order (of the Supreme Court) will be for the good of the people," Banerjee told reporters here.

The Supreme Court today stayed the Calcutta High Court's order directing the West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) to allow the e-nominations filed for the upcoming panchayat elections.

The SEC had yesterday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta High Court order that had directed it to accept nominations filed through electronic messaging for the upcoming rural polls.

The Supreme Court said that the panchayat elections will take place on May 14, according to the earlier schedule.
