Supreme Court has sought a reply from the government about private coaching institutes which are mushrooming in the country in an unregulated manner amidst allegations that some of them were fleecing students.

"Yes... SC has sought a reply from the ministry," Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Shashi Tharoor, told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

All such institutes are in the private sector and have no linkages with the government, Tharoor said in the statement.

"The ministry does not maintain data on coaching institutes. There is, as of now, no law or rules for regulating the functioning of such centres," he said.

Reports in a section of the media had last month suggested that unregulated coaching institutes were running a parallel education system in the country in a business that yields an estimated Rs 35,000 crore annually.
