A bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and J Chelameswar while staying the Andhra Pradesh High Court's September 7 order, which had garted bail to Saleem, posted the matter for further hearing on September 24.
Despite the grant of bail on September 7, Saleem had not been able to come out of the jail due to his failure to arrange the requiste surety for his release.
The NIA, meanwhile, had come to the apex court challenging the high court's order and made a special mention of its appeal today before the bench through Additional Solicitor General Harin Raval and counsel Padmalakshmi Nigam, follwoing which the high court order was stayed.
In its appeal, the NIA said Saleem along with others were involved in smuggling massive quantity of counterfeit Indian currency notes to destabilise India's monetary and financial system and to undermine its economy.
The appeal said the accused had been smuggling currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denomination from Pakistan and getting it circulated across India through a wide network.
"Their intention was to destabilise the monetary system and to threaten the internal security of the nation. As a result of the increase in terrorist activities there was a need for curbing such activities," the NIA said. (More)
