SC upholds death penalty to Yakub Memon for 1993 serial blasts

The SC had on June 2, 2014, stayed the execution of Memon

The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon seeking review of award of death penalty to him in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice A R Dave rejected the review plea of Memon, the sole death row convict in the case.

The SC had on June 2, 2014, stayed the execution of Memon.

Earlier on March 21, 2013, the apex court had upheld the death sentence of Memon.

The court had commuted the death penalty awarded by a special TADA court to 10 others, who had planted RDX explosives-laden vehicles at various places in Mumbai,, to life term by distinguishing their roles from that of Memon.
