Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari termed the Supreme Court verdict in the gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern in 2016 as a "victory of truth" that will have a "deterrent" effect.

Welcoming the Supreme Court judgement confirming death penalty awarded to the four accused in the December 16 gangrape case, Tiwari said that perpetrators of such crime should be given the "strictest" punishment.

"We welcome this judgement as the persons involved in such

crime must be given the strictest possible punishment. I feel it will prove a deterrent to other criminals," Tiwari said.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, through a unanimous verdict, today upheld the Delhi High Court judgement which had concurred with the trial court decision in the gangrape that took place in South Delhi's Vasant Vihar on December 16, 2012.

The gangrape victim later succumbed to her fatal injuries while undergoing treatment at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital where she was flown by the government, on December 29, 2012.
