Schedule for holding election to the Village Councils in the areas adjoining Manipur was not known as the State Election Commission was yet to fix the date for the polls, Mizoram Local Administration Minister P. C. Lalthanliana today informed the state legislature.

Replying to questions from K. Sangthuama and Lalruatkima of the Mizo National Front (MNF), Lalthanliana said that there were 32 villages where village council polls could not be held due to law and order problems.

He said that no nominations were filed in the area identified as 'Demand area' of the Manipur-based Hmar People's Convention (Democrats) militants during the election process.

Election to the village councils in the area could not be held along with other villages on April 30 due to reported threats from the HPC (D) militants to the political parties not to file nominations or face dire consequences.

Repeated extension of dates of filing nominations did not yield results prompting the State Election Commission to defer the polls in the villages indefinitely.

The villages where village council polls were not held were 25 villages in Aizawl district, six villages in Mizoram-Assam border Kolasib district and one village in Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai district.
