Government has initiated special schemes to develop vocational skills of people in North Eastern states and 34 districts of nine states affected by Maoism, a Union minister said here today.
"The schemes would focus on developing skills in the youth from these areas to generate livelihood," Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Kodikunnil Suresh said at the Seventh National Skill Conference.
Directorate General of Employment & Training's (DGE&T) employment division has set up 20 vocational rehabilitation centres to counsel handicapped people and provide them with vocational training, he said.

Noting that 40 per cent of the country's population comprise youth, he said that the demographic trend is likely to continue until 2050, which would enable India to cater to employment needs of the world.
As per the National Policy on Skill Development, the Union Labour Ministry aims to impart employable skills to as many as 500 million youth by 2022.
