Schizophrenic patient dies under mysterious circumstances

A 35-year-old patient with mental illness alleged committed suicide under mysterious circumstances at a hospital here, police said today.

Rashpal Singh, who was admitted eight years ago at Amritsar mental hospital for acquiring Schizophrenia, committed suicide on Monday by hanging himself from his cell's ceiling, police said.

It was deliberate attempt by the inmate but negligence of the staff on duty could not be ruled out, Hospital Director B L Goel today said.

The security lapse which led to the mishap will be examined and a high level enquiry will also be set up in the matter, he said.

However, Singh was reportedly stable for the past one year and was recovering well from schizophrenia, Goel said.
 

There 110 females and 170 male patients including 12 male prisoners admitted in the hospital, with mostly diagnosed the neurotic disorder, Goel said.
