School catches fire in Kurseong

A major fire gutted part of the more than a century old Dow Hill School in Kurseong, fire brigade officials said today.

Nobody was injured as the school was closed because of winter holidays, but property worth lakhs of rupees was destroyed, they said.

The ground floor of the school, set up in 1879, caught fire at about 11.30 PM last night and it took about six hours to douse the flame.

The Teachers' room and junior dormitory in the ground floor were gutted in the fire which spread to the first floor, they said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
