School girl Bhavya downs Indonesian rival to enter main draw

Bhavya Rishi of India wore down her Indonesian rival Sima Fatma Kusuma in three games in the qualifiers to enter the main draw of the women's singles at the USD 15,000 Tata Open International Badminton Challenge here today.

Bhavya, the best girl player at the 24th Krishna Khaitan Memorial all India Juniors held in Chandigarh in October, won the 52-minute battle against her Indonesian opponent 21-19 20-22 21-12 to enter the tournament proper commencing tomorrow at the Cricket Club of India's courts.

The 16-year-old Delhi school girl, who idolises world no. 2 Saina Nehwal and is a trainee at the Prakash Padukone Academy in Bengaluru, led nine other Indian compatriots into the women's singles round of 32.
 

Among them was Shreyanshi Pardeshi, another up and coming shuttler, survived a three-game battle to put it across another Indonesian girl, Guniarti Rafika Mutiara in 30 minutes. Shreyanshi won 13-21 21-14 21-11.

However, Vaishnavi Kaari was not as lucky and lost in three games to Indonesia's Erlina Kurnianti after a 56-minute tussle.

Apart from Bhavya and Shreyanshi, the other Indian girls who got into the main draw were Mayuri Yadav, Mughda Agrey, Pooja Mudaliar, Vaishnavi Bhale, Anura Prabhudesai, Karishma Wadkar, Harika Veludurthi and Ira Sharma.

Thirteen Indian boys also made the grade and leading the list was Ashish Sharma who got the better of Jin Lei Chuang of Singapore 20-22 21-13 21-13 in 50 minutes.

The others were K Ajay Kumar, Kabir Kanzarkar, Oscar Bansal, Siddharth Jakhar, Ansal Yadav, Talar Laa, Ketan Chahal, C Rohit Yadav, Arun Kumar Ashok, Harshit Aggarwal, Sachin Rawat and Chirag Sen.
