Apex body of public sector enterprises 'SCOPE' has advocated for the empowerment and autonomy to state-run units for improved functioning and faster growth.

SAIL chairman C S Verma, at the 40th annual general meeting of Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE), emphasised the need for greater empowerment and autonomy to improve the functioning of PSEs, a statement said.

Verma said SCOPE also approached the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for a meeting with CEOs of member PSEs in order to discuss concerns pertaining to reforms and growth of public sector enterprises.

SCOPE sought greater participation of PSEs in government policy deliberations, he said.

In spite of challenging international business environment, where global growth is in low gear, Indian public sector firms have kept up the momentum of investment expansion and growth, Verma said.

On new initiatives of SCOPE, Verma said members are working towards setting up of a public sector academy for training and capacity building of new recruits and refresher courses for middle-level executives of PSEs.

SCOPE Director General U D Choubey said while Indian PSEs are driving the growth of the economy, the body as a nodal umbrella organisation of PSEs continues to espouse the cause of promoting excellence and transforming these public sector firms into vibrant global corporate entities.
