Bilasipara SDO Mohan Lal Surekha said a major tragedy was averted as the water level in the river was low and all the passengers were able to reach the bank.

The boat was on its way from New Hatipota to Bilasipara when it struck sand bars in shallow waters at Budher Char around 9.30 am this morning and overturned.

Around 50 passengers sustained minor injuries and 25 of them were admitted to Bilasipara hospital for treatment, he said.

Meanwhile, search and rescue operations for passengers of the boat that capsize in Champvati river, a tributary of Brhmaputra, in Assam's Bongaigaon district last evening was halted.

Altogether 21 persons were rescued and the National Disaster Response Force personnel pulled out the boat, official sources said.
