Goa based Human-Screen Interaction design firm ScreenRoot recently concluded designing a top-rated mobile banking app for a large private bank. Apple showcased the face-unlock feature of the mobile banking app on the iPhone XR launch website.
It seems counter intuitive. Few would have imagined their bank's mobile app, their TV's interface, and their favourite pizza delivery website have been designed in sunny Goa.
What comes next is not so counter-intuitive after-all. Good design requires clarity of thought. Outcomes can be aided by environments conducive for drawing inspiration. UX designers seem to have found their not-so-secret haven, and for good reason.
"Getting creative - logically and aesthetically, is 10 times harder when you've just waded through traffic for an hour to get to work," says Don Mathew. Don used to live in Bangalore and moved to Goa a year ago.
Utkarsh Shukla who moved from Delhi to Goa in 2016 says, "The population of the capital Panjim is comfortably less than half of Kormangala the upmarket suburb I used to live in."
There are many designers like Don and Utkarsh who have recently made Goa their home. Well-known design firms like ScreenRoot, based entirely in Goa since 2008, have enabled such unconventional and arguably more fulfilling career decisions. Interestingly, they have almost no local clients from Goa.
Goa seems poised to become a preferred destination for design thinkers. Throw in the sandy beaches, swaying palms and multiple daily flights to all metros and the charm gets stronger. It's not surprising that the number of designers who apply to work with ScreenRoot is increasing by the dozens with every passing month.
