Sculptor B R Khedkar passes away

Veteran sculptor B R Khedkar passed away here today following prolonged illness, family sources said.

He was 90.

Khedkar had sculpted over 450 bronze statues of several well-known personalities including warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar.

His last rites were performed here.

Born in a family of pot-makers, Khedkar worked as an artist with several film companies. He was entrusted with the responsibility to prepare the sets of Bollywood movie "Mughal-E-Azam".

The creation of the sets for the movie received several accolades.

Khedkar also prepared the lord Ganesh idols for pandals in the city. He had also mastered the techniques of making rubber masks.
 

In 1960, he quit the film industry.
