South Delhi Municipal Corporation today said it will hire a total of 583 temporary Safai Karmcharis for all its zones.

Deputy South Delhi Mayor Parveen Rana said that a recent inspection had revealed a lack of sanitation staff in a majority of schools.

He said he had requested the Commissioner and the corporation to take urgent action to hire Safai Karmcharis so that a clean environment may be ensured for the 3.43 lakh children studying in its schools.

"Our 588 schools do not have basic infrastructure... We have to look beyond political competitiveness and work for the development of children," he said.

Rana, however, said that the hiring of temporary Safai Karmcharis would not solve the problem and permanent staff has to be recruited "for sorting out the problem".
