Delhiites were a disappointed lot today as the showers predicted by the MeT department eluded the national capital.

The temperature oscillated between a maximum of 42.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 33.3 degrees Celsius, both five notches above normal.

In Uttar Pradesh, light to moderate rain and thundershowers at a few places brought some relief, even as most parts of the region continued to swelter under a stifling hot spell.

The maximum rainfall of 18 cm was received in Bhinga, followed by Katarniaghat (10 cm), the MeT department said.

The day temperatures fell appreciably in Lucknow and Gorakhpur divisions and remained above normal in Agra, Meerut and Moradabad divisions.

Etawah recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 44.6 degrees Celsius.

There was little respite for the twin states of Haryana and Punjab as well with the maximum temperature settling up to five notches above normal in many places.

Hisar was the hottest place in the region with the mercury settling at a high of 43 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.

Amritsar braved a high of 42.8 degrees Celsius, five notches above normal, while the maximum temperature at Patiala touched 42 degrees Celsius.

Ludhiana simmered at a high of 41.9 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal, followed by Ambala at 41.3 deg C, Chandigarh 40.7 deg C and Karnal 40.6 deg C.

The MeT has predicted light to moderate rains at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana during the next 48 hours. MORE
