SEC asks Odisha govt to complete delimitation of wards for ULB

The State Election Commission has asked Odisha government to complete the delimitation of wards and reservation of seats and offices of chairpersons and mayors of civic bodies by January 31, 2018.

The task will have to be undertaken by the district magistrates as the first step towards holding elections to 93 urban local bodies due next year, SEC Secretary R N Sahu said in a letter to the state government.

After getting the information from the state government, the SEC will prepare the electoral rolls and identify the polling stations in order to facilitate a smooth elections for the ULBs.
 

While the term of 66 ULBs including Berhampur Municipal Corporation term will expire on September 30, 2018, the term of 20 ULBs term will expire on December 4, 2018. Another two ULBs will complete its term on December 9, 2018, the SEC letter said.

While Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation will complete its term on 17 January, 2019, Cuttack Municipal Corporation and Baripada Municipalitys term expires on 13 February, 2019. Balangir and Titilagarh Municipality term ends on 11 July, 2019, the SEC letter said.

The SEC letter stated that Article 243-U of the Constitution stipulates that election to constitute a municipality shall have to be completed before the expiry of its term of five years.
