A suspected contract killer has been arrested for allegedly carrying out an attack on the headman of a village here, police said.

The accused, identified as one Gyan Singh from village Khelda of Dausa in Rajasthan was arrested last night, they said.

Acting on a secret tip-off, police nabbed Gyan and recovered a countrymade .315 bore pistol along with one live cartridge from his possession, Deputy superintendent of police (Loni circle) Anil Yadav said.

Gyan told the police that he was given the contract for killing Omvir, the newly-elected head of Teela Shabazpur here, by the former headman of the village, one Rajesh Mavi, he said.

During interrogation Gyan told the police that he has good relations with Mavi (ex-village head) and his relative Anand. He and his friend were hired by Gaurav, Mavi's son, his brother-in-law Anand and Rajendra to kill Omvir, he said.

They also provided two country made pistols of .315 bore and five cartridges to each of them, he added.

Omvir was going on foot to condole the death of a neighbour in the Loni Road area when two youths on a motorcycle engaged him in a heated exchange before firing two bullets at him on December 23.

While one bullet pierced Omvir's chest on the right side, the second one grazed his forehead. The village head was immediately rushed to a local hospital from where he was referred to Max Hospital in Kaushambi.

Earlier, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Loni circle) Anil Yadav had said it was being claimed that Mavi had deliberately landed himself in Dasna jail before the attack on Omvir in order to create an alibi.

To unearth the whole conspiracy police will file an application before district court to seek remand of Rajesh said Dy SP Yadav adding that Gyan has been sent to jail.
