Security beefed up in West Bengal ahead of I-Day

The police has beefed up security in West Bengal ahead of the 72nd Independence Day tomorrow, a senior police officer said today.

Security measures have been made foolproof throughout the state especially in the bordering areas to avoid any untoward incident, a senior official at the state Home department said.

According to a Kolkata Police officer, every entry and exit points of the city have been kept under extensive surveillance as part of the enhanced security measures across the state.

"Around 24 points across city borders have been kept under surveillance. Hotels, lodging centres in and around the city are being constantly monitored," the officer told PTI.

 

Checking of vehicles entering and exiting the city and the districts including those arriving at the airport have been started, he said adding that several sand bag bunkers were set up at key junctures.

In Kolkata, city police's Special Task Force would keep a close watch on the movements of things besides, checking CCTV footages at different crossings.

Security arrangements in the city have been divided into two parts. One for the Independence Day parade venue at Red Road and another for the entire city

Kolkata Police would deploy a drone in and around the Independence Day celebration venue on the Red Road tomorrow morning, he said.

"It would monitor movements of people within the area on the Red Road the venue of the Independence Day celebrations. There will be extra policemen deployed at most public places, pilgrim spots as well as shopping malls and movie halls tomorrow and that will continue till this weekend," he said.

According to the officer the Red Road has been divided into 14 zones where top officers of Kolkata Police would keep a close watch, as part of the special security arrangements for the Independence Day parade.
