In the wake of Sarabjit Singh's death after a murderous assault in a Lahore prison and attack on a Pakistani prisoner in Jammu, security has been stepped for Pak prisoners lodged in Punjab jails, a minister said today.

Security of all the 57 Pakistani prisoners languishing in Punjab jails have been beefed up and as a precautionary measure they are not being allowed to move out of their barracks, Punjab Jail Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur said.

"Out of the total 38 Pakistani prisoners in Amritsar Jail 28 have completed their terms and are lodged in a transit camp within the Jail", the minister added.

Terming the frequent deaths of prisoners and recent incidents of violence in the jail premises as "unfortunate", he said the Punjab government has taken some corrective measures in this regard.

Taking serious note of the alleged substandard and adulterated medicines being used in the jails, the Minister said the Health department has been asked to ensure the supply of adequate and good quantity medicines in all the Jails of the state.
