Security guard breaks open ATM, steals Rs 23 lakh

A security guard allegedly broke open an ATM machine of the State Bank of India and stole Rs 23 lakh at Dalgate here, police said today.

Syed Ishfaq Shah, the security guard, who allegedly stole the money on the intervening night of July 14-15, was arrested today.

Rs 21.55 lakh were recovered at Shah's instance from the lawn of his house at Beerwah in Central Kashmir's Budgam district, a police spokesman said.

"Shah told his interrogators that he managed to get the password used by the bank employees at the time of replenishment of the cash at the ATM machine," he said.
