Police and para-military forces were deployed at all vulnerable points and at the complexes of important installations while passers-by at various places were being checked to detect movement of anti-social elements, officials said today.

They said security measures were also intensified at all the district headquarters to conduct the independence day celebrations smoothly and to prevent any untoward incident.

Police commandos and personnel were also posted at all the important and centrally-located places round the clock.

All police and security posts in the state have also been instructed to step up checking of passers-by and to move out of their posts to search any suspected objects within their jurisdiction, they said.

The coordination committee (CORCOM) of seven major insurgent outfits including United National Liberation (UNLF), Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup (KYKL) have called for boycott of celebrations saying that Manipur was 'forcibly merged' with the union in 1949.

In a joint statement here, the CORCOM appealed to the people to boycott the functions and remain indoors during the celebrations.
