The Election Commission of Delhi today asked political parties to obtain clearance for rallies, processions and public meetings at least 48 hours prior to the events, failing which approval will not be given.

The EC officials, in turn, will respond to the applications within 36 hours of receiving them.

"We have asked all the political parties and candidates to apply for permission at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled rally or procession. Applications for permission submitted less than 48 hours prior the event won't be considered and would be straightaway rejected," an EC official said.

The Commission said it would initiate action against the official concerned if he fails to grant permission or reject an application within the specified time-frame of 36 hours.

Political parties and candidates will have to obtain permission from the police, Returning Officers, DDA, MCD and some other departments, officials of which would be present at the District Election Officer's office, it said.

Election Commission recently put in place a single window system in all districts of Delhi for granting permission for poll-related activities, including organising rallies and processions.

The decision was taken following complaints by political parties, which said they were being forced to obtain permission from multiple agencies for election-related activities, leading to confusion.
