Select pulses slide on easing demand; gram and its dal up

Press Trust of India New Delhi
Select pulses led by arhar and urad drifted to Rs 300 per quintal at the wholesale market today following fall in demand at prevailing levels and government's steps to curb rising prices.

However, gram and its dal moved up on selective buying against restricted arrivals from producing belts.

Traders said easing demand from retailers at existing levels mainly led to decline in select prices.

Meanwhile, the Centre will provide states a subsidy of Rs 10 per kg on imported tur dal (pigeon peas) to make it available to people at an affordable cost.

The government will supply tur dal to states at Rs 67 per kg as against the import price of Rs 77 a kg. Tur dal is being sold at a current average retail price of Rs 135 per kg across the country.

State-owned trading firm MMTC had floated a tender, on behalf of the government, for import of 5,000 tonnes of tur dal in order to boost domestic supply and curb price.

Volatile movements in the rupee against the dollar also influenced the sentiment, they said.

In the national capital, arhar weakened to Rs 9,500-9,600 from previous close of Rs 9,500-9,900 per quintal.

Urad and its dal chilka local also dropped Rs 300 each to Rs 8,400-9,000 and Rs 9,400-9,600 per quintal, respectively.

Its dal best quality and dhoya eased by a similar margin to Rs 9,500-10,100 and Rs 9,900-10,200 per quintal, respectively.

Moong and its dal chilka local declined Rs 200 each to Rs 6,300-7,000 and Rs 7,100-7,600 per quintal respectively. Its dal dhoya local and best quality traded lower by the same margin to Rs 7,100-7,400 and Rs 7,900-8,000 per quintal respectively.

Moth too slipped by Rs 200 to Rs 5,600-5,900 per quintal.

On the other hand, gram rose to 4,900-5,500 from previous level of Rs 4,650-5,350 per quintal. Its dal local and best quality were up by Rs 200 each to Rs 5,150-5,350 and Rs 5,250-5,550 per quintal respectively.
