Alert police today foiled an attempt by a man to self immolate on the district collectorate premises, after failing to get any response to his application seeking free land for the last six months.

The 45-year old Saravanakumar had reportedly applied for a land at Sulur Tahsildar office some six months ago. Since there was no no response, he submitted a memorandum to the District Collector Archana Patnaik, three months ago.

Since thre was response for his application, Saravanakumar came to the district collectorate this morning and doused himself with kerosene he was carrying.

Before he could proceed further, alert police personnel over powered him and took him to the nearest police station, police said.
