Tension brewed as the body of a GJM activist, who died after self-immolation, was brought to his home town Kalimpong as the police kept a watch on its supporters who waited for hours along the street to have a glimpse of what they termed "the first martyr of Gorkhaland".

Mangal Singh Rajput had attempted self immolation six days back and with ninety per cent burn injury was treated at the Siliguri hospital where he breathed his last.

His body was first brought to Dubarchowk area where a huge crowd of GJM supporters thronged the street and shouted slogans against the Centre and West Bengal government demanding separate state.

Tomorrow before the cremation, the GJM announced that they will organise a "silent procession" through the main thorough fares of Kalimpong town as mark of protest and demanding Gorkhaland.

According to police, security has been tightened in the entire township to avoid any untoward incident.
