Jolie was snubbed in both the best director and best picture category for her wartime epic 'Unbroken' despite the hype.
Based on the harrowing but inspiring story of Olympian turned World War II prisoner Louis Zamperini, 'Unbroken' seemed set to gain entry in the Oscars list but it has been overlooked across the board apart from the technical categories.
She wasn't the only female director to be snubbed as 'Selma' helmer Ava DuVernay did not get recognised for her work on the civil rights period film either, which was nominated in the best picture and best original song category.
In the best actress category, Marion Cotillard scored a surprise nomination for her role in 'Two Days, One Night', a slot many thought would go to Jennifer Aniston for her role in the indie film 'Cake', or Adams for 'Big Eyes'.
Bradley Cooper surprisingly landed his third consecutive nomination in three years for 'American Sniper', which also managed to bag a nod in the best picture category. However, director Clint Eastwood, a four-time Oscar nominee and a two-time winner, was omitted from the best director list.
