In order to create an awareness of the perils of riding two wheelers without a helmet, Shiv Sena's transport wing - 'Shiv Vahatuk Sena' (SVS) has started a drive, urging bikers to follow traffic rules.

SVS president and Sena leader Haji Arafat Shaikh said that under the campaign named 'Sar bachao, ghar bachao' (protect head, protect your family) those riding bikes without helmets would also be given the protective head gear.

"The drive which kicked off today on the occasion of Yuva Sena Chief Aaditya Thackeray's birthday, will be conducted in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayandar and Pune," Shaikh said.

"During the day, we will distribute over 5,000 helmets to those who ride bikes without helmet and appeal them to follow traffic rules," he added.

The Sena leader also said as part of the drive about 25 Shivsainiks would be posted on locations like Sion circle, Bandra signal near Mhada building, Goregaon Aarey road in Mumbai, Vashi Creek Bridge, Palm Beach road in Navi Mumbai and on the Mira-Bhayandar highway.

"The drive will not be for a day but will go on till the next 3-4 months and (we) will keep giving free helmets for bikers safety," he added.

SVS will also appeal the youth who ride recklessly and at high speeds or who are involved in racing at nights to drive safely, Shaikh said.

"Their (the youths) parents have bought them the bikes for their happiness and not to lose them," he added.
