Shiv Sena workers staged a demonstration against the ongoing work of the Metro-3 project and damaged a contractor's vehicle here on Monday, police said.
Three Sena workers were arrested on rioting and other charges during the demonstration held at Thakurdwar in South Mumbai to protest inconvenience caused to members of the public due to the under-construction 33.5-km long corridor, they said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pranay Ashok told PTI, "We have arrested three Sena workers under relevant sections of the IPC, including 146 (rioting), 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others)."
Around 200 Shiv Sainiks accompanied by local residents staged the demonstration at Thakurdwar under the guidance of the party's Vibhag Pramukh (area head), Pandurang Sakpal.
The protest was organised by Shiv Sena's South Mumbai wing against the inconvenience caused to local residents, schoolchildren, senior citizens and motorists due to the metro work which has also caused cracks in some nearby structures.
The protesters shouted slogans against the MMRDA, the state-run firm implementing the project, and private developer DB Realty.
They broke the glass of a dumper belonging to one of the metro contractors while it was parked outside the Charni Road Station, the police said.
The Metro-3 line will connect Colaba in south Mumbai to SEEPZ in suburban Andheri. It will have 27 stations out of which 26 will be underground.
