Senior BJP leader Harish Chandra Srivastava passes away

Senior BJP leader and former cabinet minister in the Uttar Pradesh government Harish Chandra Srivastava passed away in the wee hours here today, party sources said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union minister Kalraj Mishra and other senior BJP leaders talked to Saurabh Srivastava, son of the deceased over phone and condoled the death of the veteran leader, Sanjay Bhardwaj, BJP media Incharge of Eastern UP region said.

The 90-year-old leader was keeping unwell for a long time, he said, adding that the last rites will take place at Harishchandra ghat today.

Srivastava was elected to Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Varanasi thrice. He served as a cabinet minister in 1977 Janata Party ministry, Bhardwaj said.
 

Born in the year 1925 in Manikpur village in Goraphpur, the leader was elected as an MLA from there for the first time.

He is survived by wife Jyotsana Srivastava, a son and a daughter, Bhardwaj said, adding that Jyotsana is an elected BJP MLA from Cantonment seat in Varanasi.
