The population of senior citizens in the country would increase to over 17 crore by 2026, which is around 12 per cent of total population, the Registrar General of India has projected.
The information was given by Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Vijay Sampla as a reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
As per the May 2006 report of Technical Group on population projections furnished by the Office of RGI, senior citizens population in 2016 is projected at 11.81 per cent and 14.31 per cent in 2021, he said.
The population of senior citizens has increased from 7.7 crore to 10.38 crore between 2001 and 2011, he said.
