Assam Governor P B Acharya today said senior citizens are an asset to the nation and not a burden and have a very important role to play in the society.

"Senior citizens have an important role to play in maintaining peace, tranquillity and in spreading the message of brotherhood. Their experiences in life can be a source of inspiration to different sections of the society, particularly to the students and the youth in general," Acharya said at a Senior Citizens' Conference organised at Raj Bhavan today.

He emphasised on proper organisation of all senior citizens through suitable and planned planning so that they could bring about constructive change to the society.

The Governor urged the senior citizens that on no account should they feel inferior to anybody or feel old or incapable.

There was a hidden source of energy in everybody which should be fully utilised for the betterment of future generations and improvement of society, he said.

"Let us be assets to the nation. If we plan properly we can do something by organising this section of population," he added.

The Governor also interacted with members of Senior Citizens' Organisations, senior officials and members of the Rajya Sainik Board and senior officials and members of Scouts and Guides from different districts of Assam.
