Senior Nepal leaders condole Sushma Swaraj's demise

Nepal Prime Minister K P Oli and other top leaders have expressed grief over the demise of senior BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister of India Sushma Swaraj and recalled her contributions to bilateral ties.

Swaraj died in New Delhi on Tuesday night at the age of 67 after suffering a massive heart attack.

Prime Minister Oli said he was deeply shocked to learn about Swaraj's death.

"I fondly recall how intimately she used to call me brother and share feelings of affinity," Oli wrote on Twitter.

In his separate condolence messages to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba recalled the contributions made by Swaraj in strengthening bilateral ties between Nepal and India.

 

Deuba has extended his heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family members and the Indian people.

Former Foreign Minister and President of Rastriya Prajatantra Party Kamal Thapa said he has fresh memory of Swaraj's role in improving Nepal-India relations and the collaborations he had with her.

Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali went to the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu on Thursday and signed in a condolence book on behalf of his government and the people of Nepal, according to foreign ministry sources here.

During her term as external affairs minister, Swaraj had visited Nepal in 2014, 2017 and 2018.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu is maintaining a condolence book at its premises here on Thursday and Friday, for those wishing to express their condolence over Swaraj's death.
