A senior scientist at Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) was murdered and some cash and valuable items were looted form his official residence here, police said.
Deepak Sharma (55) was killed last night using a sharp-edged weapon at his residence on the institute campus, SP (City) Sameer Saurabh said, adding that the scene of crime indicates that the assailants were known to the scientist.
According to the housemaid, at around 9 pm the assailants reached Sharma's house and entered into a room with him. Two others who remained at the door locked the scientist's mother and the maid in the bathroom, the SP said.

The assailants fled after murdering Sharma and looting cash and valuables, he said.
The two women locked in the bathroom were rescued after the maid's husband reached the spot and found the scientist dead in a chair, Saurabh said.
His wife had gone to her parents' house in Vrindavan.
A case of murder and loot has been registered against unknown persons while the maid and her husband has been taken into custody for questioning, he added.
