The benchmark BSE Sensex rose by 143 points to 26,930.23 on sustained buying by participants in a special Muhurat trading to mark the start of Hindu Samvat Year 2071.
The Sensex, which had recorded a remarkable gain of 787.89 points in the previous four sessions, added another 143.00 points, or 0.53 per cent to trade at 26,930.23 in the first five minutes of trade.
All the sectoral indices led by consumer durables, capital goods and metals were trading in positive terrain with gains up to 0.95 per cent.

On the similar lines, the broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also surged by 35.85 points, or 0.44 per cent to 8,031.35.
Brokers said the buying activity gathered momentum as investors and funds opened their new accounts on the first session of Samvat year 2071.
Meanwhile, the Sensex gained 5,590.42 points, or 26.37 per cent in Samvat 2070.
The share market has remained in a bullish mood in the past few sessions on the back of a slew of economic reforms announced by the government and strong showing by the BJP in state Assembly elections amidst continued foreign fund buying.
