The 30-scrip index resumed higher at 17,473.26 and firmed further to 17,523.77, but declined to 17,482.50 at 1045hrs, still up 56.79 points or 0.33 per cent from yesterday.
The NSE-50 share Nifty also moved up by 15.70 points or 0.30 per cent to 5,303.65 at 1045hrs.
Major gainers were Sterlite 3.37 per cent, Jindal Steel (3.26 pc), Maruti Suzuki (2.40 pc), Tata Steel (1.49 pc) and SBI (1.47 pc). ONGC declined 2.49 pc, Wipro (1.29 pc), Sun Pharma (0.91 pc) and Dr Reddy's Lab (0.75 pc).
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 589.70 crore yesterday as per provisional data from the stock exchanges.
