The mortal remains of Sepoy Jaspreet Singh, who was killed in Pakistani firing in the Naushera sector of Jammu and Kashmir, were consigned to flames with full state honours at his native village here today.

Jaspreet (24) was killed during a ceasefire violation by Pakistan Army in Rajouri district last night. He belonged to the 8 Sikh Light Infantry regiment and was attached with the Rashtriya Rifles at the time of his death.

Senior officers from the Army and the Moga district administration, local MLAs and a large number of people, including from neighbouring areas, were present when the martyr's last rites were performed this evening.

Jaspreet's father Sarwan Singh lit the funeral pyre.

Earlier, a pall of gloom descended in Talwandi Mallian vllage when Jaspreet's body, wrapped in the tricolour, was brought there.

His younger brother Kuldeep Singh said Jaspreet recently completed three years in the Sikh Light Infantry regiment and was planning to come home on July 29.

Meanwhile, the martyr's family members and some local villagers demanded that Pakistan be given a "befitting reply for its repeated misadventures".

"Our government must avenge the sacrifice of the soldiers and teach Pakistan a lesson," a local villager said.
