Sepoy Mandeep Singh cremated at native village

Sepoy Mandeep Singh, who was killed in an encounter with militants in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, was cremated at his native village Chahal Khurd here today with full military honours.

Singh, 32, was killed as the Army foiled an infiltration bid in Keran sector yesterday.

He is survived by his wife Rajwinder Kaur and two sons.

Singh joined the Army in 2004.

His body was brought to his native village from the Rajasansi airport this afternoon.

Local MLAs Balwinder Singh Laddi and Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal placed wreaths on behalf of the Punjab government.

Mandeep's father and his son lit the pyre.
 

A contingent of Army jawans from Tibberi cantonment fired in the air as a mark of respect to the soldier.

A large number of people gathered to bid a tearful adieu to the soldier.
