An elderly tribal woman was today trampled to death and another seriously injured after being attacked by a wild elephant in the foothills of Similipal forests in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district.

Pana Murmu (70) and Sumi Hansda (80) were outside their house at Babanagala under Baripada forest division when the jumbo roaming in the area attacked them causing serious injury, Divisional Forest Officer, Baripada, Sanjay Swain said.

They were taken to the sub-divisional headquarters hospital at Udala in serious condition where Pana was declared dead, while octogenarian Sumi was battling for life, he said.

Swain said two female elephants from the Similipal forests had entered nearby Jualia village yesterday and one of them was spotted roaming in the area apparently after getting separated today, he said.

Efforts are on to chase the elephant into the woods with the help of forest personnel and local people, he said.
