Seven arrested for hotel fire in China

Chinese police have arrested seven persons after a major fire at a multi-storey luxurious hotel in Nanchang killed 10 people last week.

Seven persons, including workers and contractors for an ongoing construction project that went ablaze, were arrested yesterday on suspicion of negligence that caused the fire at the hotel in Nanchang, capital of China's eastern Jiangxi Province, state-run Xinhua news agency said today, quoting government of Nanchang city.

The fire at HNA Platinum Mix Hotel in Nanchang City killed 10, including three hotel guests and seven construction workers, according to the city government.

The condition of the three persons who were among the nine injured in the deadly fire was stated to be serious.
 

Yesterday, it was reported thatpolice have detained 24 people in connection with Saturday's fire.

Twenty-four people, including hotel shareholders, the contractor of the project and workers, have been taken into police custody, the report said.

A preliminary investigation found the blaze was caused by welding and cutting which violated safety rules.

Over 260 residents of a 24-storey apartment building connected to the hotel also had a providential escape.

This was the second major fire accident in China this month. Eighteen people were killed in a fire at a foot massage parlour caught fire in the eastern province of Zhejiang.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out today in a market in northeast Beijing, but no casualties were reported.

The market deals in secondhand furniture, books, antiques and other items.

A total of 46 fire engines were deployed to put out the fire and police cordoned off surrounding areas and diverted traffic.

The flames were put out in about two hours. Clean-up efforts are under way and the cause of the fire is under investigation, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
