Seven cops suspended in a case of alleged custodial death

Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy issued orders today suspending seven police officials including a police inspector in a case of alleged custodial death, it was officially announced here today.

According to a press release issued by the police, the officials sub inspector, an Assistant Sub Inspector and four constables besides the inspector, belonging to Asif Nagar Police Station, were placed under suspension for "gross negligence and dereliction of duty".

"The following officers and staff of Asif Nagar Police Station have been placed under suspension with immediate effect in the interest of fair inquiry and investigation for exhibiting gross negligence and dereliction in keeping a lady at odd hours which led to severe health complication, resulting in her death in the early morning of 23-8-2015," the release said.
 

A senior police official said that the Asif Nagar police brought the victim who is a resident of Bhojaguda area to the police station for questioning yesterday, in connection with a theft which took place a few days ago.

The police had admitted her to a government hospital after she fell ill and became unconscious, the police official said.

"She died during treatment today morning. This is not a lock-up death," the police official said.

The police commissioner has taken the issue seriously and a probe would be ordered into the incident, the police official said.
