Seven persons were arrested and one surrendered at a court in connection with the hacking to death of a prisoner here and probe revealed that it was a revenge killing for the murder of a ruling AIADMK functionary last year.

Varadan was brought from Vellore Central Prison to the Poonamallee Combined Court Complex for a hearing in a criminal case and was hacked to death in the presence of escort police personnel yesterday.

The daring murder stunned the police and the general public as well.

Police had said yesterday that the killing was suspected to be a revenge for the murder of a ruling AIADMK functionary "Bullet" Viswanathan of Nesapakkam here last year.

It was suspected that Varadan masterminded Viswanathan's killing even while he was lodged in a prison in connection with another murder case.

Although Varadan had married Viswanathan's sister, the couple had separated following differences.

Varadan also had disputes related to some properties with Viswanathan.

Rajesh, Yuvaraj, Purusothaman, Praba, Jegan, Karthik and Bhaskar have been arrested and Suresh surrendered at a court in Chengelpet today.

"Purushottam, Suresh and Yuvaraj are relatives of Viswanathan and they will be remanded soon and we will take custody of Suresh by moving court," Police Inspector, Poonamallee, K Chandrashekar told PTI.
