Seven killed in accident

Police arrested the driver when he was trying to flee the spot and seized the dumper.

According to police, 10 masons had been sleeping on a footpath near Bhati Circle here. A gravel-laden dumper ran over them at around 4.30 AM this morning.

"The dumper ran over them crushing six of them to death on the spot and injuring four others. They were immediately rushed to the MDM Hospital, where one more succumbed. Three are undergoing treatment in the hospital for fractures in legs", Additional Divisional Commissioner Govind Singh Charan, who himself visited the hospital, said.

The driver of the dumper, identified as Dinesh Bishnoi, rushed from the spot after running over them and was caught a few minutes later at around 3 KM from the spot in a police blockade.

 

"We have arrested him and seized the vehicle. He, however, has claimed to have lost balance over the vehicle in order to save someone on the road", a police officer said.

"So far, three of the deceased have been identified and efforts for the identification of the remaining is under progress", Charan said.

Some of the workers were from Jodhpur and surrounding areas and some of them from other states.

The administration has announced a relief package of Rs 20,000 for the dead and Rs 5,000 for injured.
