The Chennai-bound Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation bus was coming from Hosur when the mishap occurred, police said.
Initial reports had suggested eight persons were killed in the accident.
All the injured have been admitted to government hospital here and the condition of nine of them was serious, police said.
The bus driver tried to flee the spot after the mishap, but local people nabbed him and handed him over to the police.
