Seven time Congress MP Chhitubhai Gamit passes away in Bardoli

Seven time Congress MP from Mandvi (Scheduled Tribe) Lok Sabha constituency in Surat, Chhitubhai Gamit, passed away this morning after suffering a cardiac arrest in Bardoli town here.

Chhitubhai Gamit (71) is survived by his wife and three sons.

"He felt uneasiness before going to his farm today, before collapsing suddenly. He died on the way to the Sardar Smarak Hospital in Bardoli," his family said today.

Condoling his death, Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi said that Gamit would be remembered for his selfless service to the people.

"Seven time MP Chhitubhai Gamit will be remembered for his selfless service to the people. Condolences to his family on his demise. RIP (rest in peace)," Modi tweeted on the micro-blogging site Twitter.
 

Born on April 22, 1942, Gamit was appointed secretary and treasurer of the Surat District Congress Committee from 1976 onwards.

The Mandvi constituency is now known as Bardoli, from where Congress MP and Union minister of state Tushar Chaudhary, has been elected.

Gamit was first elected to the Sixth Lok Sabha in 1977 and was a member of consultative committee in the Ministry of Planning and Industry.

Gamit was re-elected to the Seventh Lok Sabha in 1980, before being re-elected for a third time to the Eighth Lok Sabha. He was again elected to the Lower House in 1989 and 1991.

Gamit was re-elected to the Eleventh Lok Sabha for his penultimate term in 1996, before his seventh and final term in the Lower House in 1998.

In 1998-99, he was a member of Committee on Agriculture and Public Undertakings.
