A seven-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered by an unidentified person in suburban Mulund in the city last night, police said today.

Police had taken one person in custody for questioning, a senior police officer said this evening, but no arrest had been made yet.

According to the police, the girl's parents, who are labourers, had moved into Mulund East area only two weeks ago and were living in a street-side shack. She went to buy something from a nearby shop last evening and did not return.

The parents started searching for her and found her lying unconscious under a truck late in the night.

Police took her to hospital where she was declared dead upon arrival.

Preliminary medical examination revealed that the victim had been sexually assaulted and murdered.

A case under relevant sections of IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered at the Navghar police station.

Police have obtained CCTV footage from the area to identify the culprit.
